PNP.GOV.PH: Philippine National Police

CARNAPPING INCIDENTS DROP TO 70% SINCE JUNE 2014; 86% of carnapped vehicles are taxi

The Philippine National Police recorded an average of eight (8) carnapping incidents from August 24 to September 27, 2015 which made a 70% decrease from an average of 39 incidents before Oplan Lambat-Sibat started on June 2014.

According to the PNP Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management (DIDM), the police district with most significant decrease in carnapping incidents is the Quezon City Police District with only one (1) recorded incident from September 21-27, 2015. It can be recalled that out of 39 incidents in June 2014, QCPD has recorded 15 cases of carnapping.

From September 21-27, 2015, Southern Police District (SPD) also recorded only (1) incident of carnapping followed by Manila Police District (MPD) and Eastern Police District (EPD) with two (2) incidents each, and Northern Police District (NPD) with three (3) recorded cases of carnapping.

Furthermore, DIDM also noted that 86% of carnapped Public Utility Vehicles (PUVs) from January 5 to September 27, 2015 were taxicabs and 12% were jeepneys; while 27% of carnapped Private Vehicles were Vans followed by sedans with 19%, SUVs with 18% and cargo trucks with 17%.

On the other hand, 54% of carnapped vehicles were stolen while parked and 29% of these were forcibly taken.

63% of these carnapping incidents happened from 12:01 AM until 8:00 AM that is why PNP Chief Director General Ricardo C. Marquez reminds the public anew to be more vigilant against carnapping especially during night-time. Thus, advises the public of some safety tips like:

Always park your car at a safe, secure and well-lighted places or areas.

Install security alarm and security devices in your car.

Make sure to lock your car windows and doors at all times.

The PNP leadership is also planning to upgrade their Lambat-Sibat efforts by visiting business establishments who sell second-hand motor vehicles to ensure their legitimacy and eliminate the chances of selling carnapped vehicles. (PNP-PIO)
